The Big Green Egg, commonly referred to as a kamado barbecue, derives its basic design from an ancient clay cooking device that originated in southern Japan. Originally a clay vessel with a lid, today’s Big Green Egg is a modern ceramic wonder known for producing amazing culinary results for novice and experts alike for over thirty years!

The shape of the Egg, much like kamado-style barbecues of the past, is designed to hold heat inside the device. Using only small vents at the top and bottom, the Big Green Egg creates a draft that keeps a fire going, while also allowing for maximum temperature control. Manufactured from high fiber ceramics developed for the space shuttle program, today’s Big Green Egg allows temperatures of up to 650 degrees Celsius (1200 Fahrenheit) to be reached. In addition, the Egg’s external surface, which is coated in a high gloss ceramic glaze, is crack and weather resistant.

Big Green Eggs are most commonly used for smoking or grilling. However, with the addition of accessories, one can also bake bread or cook a pizza.

Grill | High temperature “steak house” grilling is quick and easy using the Egg. The device’s two dampers allow for accurate control of temperature regulation. The Egg is an unmatched grilling device, whether it’s a perfectly seared burger or seafood with an unmatched, flavor-packed crust that you crave.

Oven | Using the indirect cooking method with a Plate Setter, the Big Green Egg bakes bread, pizza, casseroles, cobblers and pies better than your kitchen oven. The Egg’s heat-retaining design packs moisture into foods so that they don’t dry out. Poultry, lamb, beef and vegetables are naturally tastier because the juices and flavors stay locked inside.

Smoker | The insulating ceramics of the Big Green Egg allow you to precisely control the temperature even at low heat. A controllable 200 to 350°F / 93 to 177°C gives succulent results with turkey, ham, lamb, chicken, ribs or any of your favorite cuts, infusing them with the aromatic wood smoke flavor. Want to slow cook at low heat for sixteen to eighteen hours … no problem!
